ET (the evaporation of water from
the ground and the transpiration of water from a plant) during hot
weather are measurements of water loss during the day. On average,
the soil loses about .10 to .15” of water per day. The hottest
days of the 2005 summer recorded a peak ET day of .27”, which
over four days results in over one full inch!
These new ET stations record each day’s water
loss, keeping watering off until loss reaches 40 to 50% of the amount
of water in the ground. The system then tells the onsite computer
controller to water during the night and for how long based upon
specific site information you input into your computer when you
set up your site. Early estimates show water consumption savings
of over 50% using this technology. |
